FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the most common questions. For depth, jump to the relevant section above.

InsuranceDoes standard travel insurance cover injuries from shelling in Ukraine?
Usually not — standard policies contain a «war-and-terrorism exclusion». The Ukrainian «Brave» policy from Euroins Ukraine additionally activates event 4.1.1 GTCP — injuries from mines, missiles, shelling, strike drones — within Ukrainian territory excluding the 4-category exclusion list (combat zones, temporarily occupied territories, 50-km buffer, special-regime areas).
InsuranceHow much does insurance with war-risk coverage cost?
The price is calculated by the insurer's system based on age, duration, number of travelers, and coverage level. Approximately a few euros per day at standard coverage (€30,000). The exact amount for your specific trip is shown by the form below on this page.
InsuranceCan I cancel the policy after purchase?
Yes. Before the policy takes effect (insurance period has not started) — full refund within 14 calendar days from issuance per EU IDD Art. 20. After the policy has taken effect — partial refund: the insurer's administrative cost ratio is deducted plus the value of the period already in force (pro rata per day). The exact refund amount in each case is calculated by the insurance company upon individual request — email info@welcomeukraine.today with your contract number; we forward the request to the insurer; response within 5 business days.
Border crossingsWhat documents do I need to cross the Ukrainian border?
Passport (for foreigners), visa if required by citizenship, medical insurance. Ukrainian male citizens aged 18-60 face martial-law restrictions. Details by document type and country — in our border-crossing guides.
Border crossingsWhich border checkpoints are operating?
All western checkpoints (with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania) plus Moldova. Russian and Belarusian — closed. Specific checkpoints and wait times — in B-cluster guides.
Border crossingsHow long does border crossing take?
From 30 minutes to 12+ hours depending on the checkpoint, time of day, and day of week. Fastest — pedestrian crossings. Longest — vehicle crossings on Friday and Sunday. Current queue data — on the State Border Service of Ukraine website.
CustomsWhat can I bring without declaring?
Cash up to €10,000 (equivalent in any currency), personal items (phone, laptop, camera), 1 L spirits or 2 L wine (over 18), 200 cigarettes. Electronics for personal use — no restrictions.
CustomsAre satellite phones and drones allowed?
Satellite phones (Iridium, Inmarsat, Starlink Mini) — only with permit from the State Service on Communications (Resolution 1807). Private drones (all categories, including Mavic Mini) — full ban during martial law (Decree 64/2022). Journalists and NGOs — simplified path via MFA + SPRAVDI (3-7 days).
SafetyIs it currently safe to travel to Ukraine?
Depends on the region. Kyiv, Dnipro, Odesa, Lviv — tourist infrastructure operates, with air alerts. Kharkiv — mostly the city center. Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts — mostly not (50-km buffer from the line of contact). Sumy and northern Chernihiv — partially. Details by region — in D-cluster, especially article D3 on lowest-risk regions.
SafetyWhat should I do during an air raid alert?
Install the official «Air Alert» app (developer: Ajax Systems Inc., in partnership with the Kyiv City Administration). When the siren sounds, go to shelter: metro, basement, or anywhere with two walls between you and the nearest window («two walls» rule). Not near glass. Details — article D2 on air alerts.
